How to find your personal style

How to Find Your Personal Style

In a world of overconsumption, we’re feeling it’s increasingly important to hone your personal style and become an intentional shopper. Finding your style is a process that probably looks different for everyone, some people know what they like early on and others are into a lot of things, needing to experiment more. There’s no right or wrong and refining your taste is a creative practice that is at everyone’s fingertips. Exploring your personal style through your home aesthetic can be a lifelong, ever-evolving creative journey if that feels exciting to you, and that’s really what our community is all about. Here are some of our tips to help you along the way:

  1. Start with the basics - when was your home built? What style is it? Does it have any architectural details that you want to revolve your decor around? Even a lack of architectural details could inspire you to embrace minimalism or bring the charm! The options may be endless, but listen to what feels true to you.

  2. Personal style is personal - pay attention to what makes your heart sing. This is no time to be swayed by what others think. Your home should celebrate you in beauty and function. Use a nostalgic place, a restaurant that has a good feel to it, or a memorable travel location to ground you before looking for inspiration from what’s trending

  3. Look for inspiration - now that you’ve found something to ground your design, start looking at magazines and pinterest to collect ideas. Making a mood board can really help create a cohesive visual for your space. Vintage design books or historic house tours in your area can be a great way to find off-the-beaten-path inspiration.

  4. Experiment - take calculated risks. If you know us, you know we love second-hand shopping for this reason, but this can also include painting a room, buying some funky accessories, rearranging your furniture and shopping your house, trading things with friends, organizing swaps and just generally getting creative!

  5. Go slow - live with things for a while and wait until you get ideas or you feel motivated. Going slow makes designing your home more sustainable, and more of a process vs. something to just get done! If it feels fun and creative, lean into the lifestyle. Save your budget up to make more investment pieces like art, wallpaper and handmade or high end furniture, it doesn’t all happen at once, this is your canvas to create beauty. It takes years to create a storied home.

  6. Layer - once you figure out the practicalities, and the basic setup of a room you can start to slowly layer in with fabrics, accessories, patterns, colors, art, lighting. Think of it as the jewelry for the room. If your space is feeling boring, uninspired or cold, chances are you need to add some layers.
