How to find your personal style
In a world of overconsumption, we’re feeling it’s increasingly important to hone your personal style and become an intentional shopper. Finding your style is a process that probably looks different for everyone, some people know what they like early on and others are into a lot of things, needing to experiment more. There’s no right or wrong and refining your taste is a creative practice that is at everyone’s fingertips. Exploring your personal style through your home aesthetic can be a lifelong, ever-evolving creative journey if that feels exciting to you, and that’s really what our community is all about. Here are some of our tips to help you along the way:
avoiding the landfill: What do i do with my old furniture
There are plenty of reasons you might need to up and move and suddenly rehouse some of your furniture. According to the U.S.Census Bureau, Americans move on average around 12 times in their lifetime. Moving can be stressful, expensive and full of logistical headaches. One of which is what to do with all your stuff.
Fast Furniture and how to shop better
We’ve been talking a lot about fast furniture after reading this recent article and this one (we even made a TikTok about it). It’s a big topic, one that we care a lot about as we strive to navigate the world of design more consciously. We are passionate about the decorative arts and the value that it has in this world. Having a beautiful, functional home is supposed to be about following your joys, your tastes, and your practicalities. But when does budget furniture come at too high a cost? If buying new furniture from a big box store is not built to last, inevitably being harder on our wallets and the planet, then how do we change our habits? Let’s talk solutions.
Hosting people when your home design isn’t “done”
The reality is it will probably always be in process or at least could feel that way for a while. Both Claire and I have moved into our homes recently and even though we believe it’s important to enjoy it at every stage, we wanted to share the tips from our community to help you get there:
Linny’s Living room
We moved into our house a year and a half ago and it’s taken me that long to get our main living space feeling right. We’ve of course lived in it and enjoyed it throughout that time, we’re not waiting around for perfection here, but it has been a journey waiting for that feeling that I rely on when I design a space. A feeling when everything starts to click into place, where even when things are unfinished, I have a sense of what the steps are. That can include short-term goals, like finding the right pillows for our couches, or long-term goals like bead boarding and painting our ceiling to cover up the texture we inherited.
Trend alert: STICK OF BUTTER interiors
The Stick of Butter trend is hardly new, we’re dating it back to 2018 when fashion gem, Harling Ross coined the phrase to describe her butter-toned monochrome looks. It’s since taken on a life of its own, see the #stickofbutter hashtag on Instagram, or the butter carving couch dinner party turned workshop hosted by Maker and Son. Maybe this carved couch was butters foray into furniture, but now we’re seeing this subtle yellow hue all over the interiors world, most recently in Molly Baz’s kitchen
Why buy vintage furniture and How to clean your vintage UpholsterY
We polled our Instagram audience recently and found that a shocking percentage of people would prefer to purchase a new couch vs. a vintage couch. Why? Germs and bed bugs. Those who wrote in preferring vintage noted quality, price point, style, and peace of mind as their reasoning. Heather from our community told us “we have a dog and a kid so the idea of buying new scares me.”
Couch round-up
The couch search can be overwhelming. The options are endless, the marketing is appealing, but a couch is a big purchase and therefore a decision that needs to be carefully considered. We’ve rounded up our favorites of the moment at a total mix of price points and styles.
